Draymond Green Hints at Warriors Trade Being Close

The Golden State Warriors have had an active offseason. After watching longtime Warrior Klay Thompson head to Dallas in free agency, Golden State wasted little time adding depth and even finding his replacement.

The Warriors have added guard De'Anthony Melton, forward Kyle Anderson, and sharpshooting wing Buddy Hield this offseason. They were also reported to be interested in trading with the Los Angeles Clippers for Paul George before he declined his player option and joined the Philadelphia 76ers.

In addition to all these moves (and near moves), the Warriors have been heavily linked to the Utah Jazz for star big man Lauri Markkanen. The Jazz are looking to trade their All-Star big, but want a haul in return. Thus far, the two sides haven't been able to reach an agreement — but maybe they were close.

On Thursday, Warriors forward Draymond Green was on Jeff Teague's Club 520 podcast, and revealed that Golden State was close to making a deal last week.

"We was just about to make some trades last week," Green said. "And I told them straight up, that trade will help me. It'll help me in my career these last couple of years with (Stephen Curry). But I've always spoken from a place of, 'What's best for this organization?' I won't stop now.

"That's a bad trade. Don't do that trade. I disagree with it, although it's gonna help me right now."

While Green didn't specify the details of the trade, he seemed to imply that it's one that would have hurt the future of the Warriors' organization.

The Jazz have reportedly been asking for a haul that could include any or all of Jonathan Kuminga, Brandin Podziemski, and Moses Moody along with picks. Kuminga and Podziemski have both been reported to be untouchable at different points this offseason, and it's possible that Green feels similarly about one or both of those players.

The latest update on the Markkanen sweepstakes came from NBA insider Marc Stein's substack. He reported the Jazz are very interested in a package of Podziemski and picks, so much so that it's keeping the trade talks alive between Golden State and Utah.

While nothing has come to fruition yet, it's clear the Warriors are working the phones trying to upgrade the roster before the 2024-25 NBA season.
