Meridian farmer's market organizer talks competition struggles:'We're not as prominent'

Meridian's Main Street Market is only a few years old, but organizers say their novelty isn't helping them out.

It's actually one of their biggest obstacles.

"We're not as prominent as the mainstream ones, not as established,” said co-coordinator, Brittany Price. “Getting the word out is something that's really important to us. We hope that everyone can do their part in that."

The market originally began as a youth farmer's market. That program is one they still pride themselves on.

"Its children operated booths,” Price said. “A lot of families do it together. It's really cool."

Some youth vendors say the experience is rewarding.

"It's been really cool just because it's a big community here,” said youth vendor, Bryce Wick. “Getting to know the vendors and just being a part of it through the years."

But, it's the attitude of the market that is its shining star.

"This one had just the most amazing people come by and everyone is fine stopping and saying hi,” said vendor, Jason Jaszkowiak. “Everyone has a great conversation, smiles on their faces, and we just love the attitude."

As of June 1, the market had 70 to 80 vendors registered. About 40 of those show up on any given Saturday.

Those involved say they know those numbers will rise.

“This is going to just keep growing,” Jaszkowiak said. “And, we just get to keep doing what we do and have a great time doing it."
