Speakers include Ryan Crocker, former U.S. ambassador to Afghanistan; Rajiv Chandrasekaran, senior correspondent and associate editor of The Washington Post; Mohammad Ayatollahi Tabaar, assistant professor at the George Bush School of Government and Public Service; and Shadman Bashir, an international lawyer at the Center for Law and Religion Studies at Brigham Young University. Presidential Alumni Recognition Gala. 6 p.m. Stueckle Sky Center, Double R Ranch Room. The annual Distinguished Alumni Awards recognize excellence among former students of the university. The campus community, alumni, students and the general public are invited to attend. Boise Philharmonic, Mozart and Schubert. 8 p.m. Morrison Center. Composers Franz Schubert and W.A. Mozart were both known for their singing melodies, effervescent orchestrations and keen wit. With these two Austrians, the philharmonic will take you to a time gone by filled with elegance and charm, while introducing one of today's rising stars, pianist George Li. EXHIBITIONS

Oct. 11-Nov. 4. "Abst-Red" Exhibition by Daehwan Cho. Student Union Gallery. Exploring digital technology including video, audio, computer graphics and video installation, Boise State University assistant communication professor Daehwan Cho utilizes metaphor-creating ambiguity to distort literal meaning and strengthen poetic implications. October 17-24. "1 in 8" by Ketchum artist Danica Mattias. This installation on the Quad will honor breast cancer survivors, those lost to the disease and other loved ones. One in eight women and one in 1,000 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. Recognize Breast Cancer Awareness month by viewing this exhibit of large-scale reed balls with tribute flags honoring individuals and glow-in-the-dark zip ties so they can be seen at all hours. Through Oct. 23. "Impressions - Selections from the Northwest Nazarene University Friesen Print Collection." Visual Arts Center, Gallery 2 in the Hemingway Western Studies Center. The exhibition includes prints by William Kentridge, Elizabeth Murray, Darren Waterson, Enrique Martinez Celeya, Mark Newport, Roger Shimomura, Vija Celmins and others. Gallery hours are 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Friday.

Through Oct. 26. "Nathan Craven - Construct." Visual Arts Center, Gallery 1 in the Liberal Arts Building. Roswell, New Mexico, ceramics artist Nathan Craven's work is based on ceramics as a building material, specifically the brick, which has a long history of use as a unit of construction. The building of walls and floors, their placement and the materials they are made from create varying spaces and determine our interactions within an architectural volume. Gallery hours are 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Friday.

Through Dec. 5. "Chapters from the History of the Book." Arts and Humanities Institute Gallery, Yanke Family Research Park, 220 E. Parkcenter Blvd. Produced by the Idaho Center for the Book, the exhibit, "Chapters from the History of the Book," features 31 books and artifacts spanning centuries and continents, such as manuscripts, early printed books, palm leaf books and early Coptic materials. Through Jan. 13. "Color Fields: Artworks by Lisa Flowers Ross." Special Events Center. Inspired by aerial photographs of tulip fields in bloom, the series "Color Fields," by Boise-based artist Lisa Flowers Ross, portrays abstractions of the natural world utilizing geometric shapes and lines. Creating bold compositions with fabrics she hand dyes, Flowers Ross cuts and stitches together pieces using methods based on traditional quilting. Visit finearts.boisestate.edu.

Founded in 1924, the ensemble uses the instrumentation requirements of Ludwig Spohr's Grand Nonetto, Op. 31 (violin, cello, flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon and horn). This program is different than the one presented on Oct. 26.
