Idaho's water supply in good stead for winter 2023-24 due to high reservoir carryover and El Nio w

Idaho's Water Supply Committee held a meeting on Monday, and the main takeaway is we are in a good place heading into winter 2023-24.

Summer 2023 was generally cool and wet, so Idaho ended with an abnormally high reservoir carryover across Southern Idaho due to reduced irrigation water use. High reservoir carryover will provide much water for the next irrigation season, and less total snowpack will be needed in some places for a complete irrigation supply.

Overall, the weather pattern switched to El Niño due to warmer ocean temperatures 3.5 F above normal. On average, an El Niño winter should lead to warmer and drier weather.

With El Niño, the jet stream is expected to track farther south.

Winter should be coming soon. Looking into next week, the seven-day forecast shows Idaho's above-normal temperatures will drop down to below-normal next week. Above-normal precipitation is also expected next week.

From Nov. 19-23, Thanksgiving week, the weather pattern is expected to switch over to cooler and wetter, so Idaho should get some snow that week.

Three-month forecasts show warmer and drier weather, but those forecasts are very speculative and not necessarily reliable.
